A estação Central de Helsínquia é uma das pérolas da arte nova de Helsinquia; foi desenhada pelo arquiteto Eliel Saarinen e inaugurada em 1919.

Arrival
The Helsinki Central Station, a pearl among Helsinki's art nouveau buildings, was designed by Eliel Saarinen and opened in 1919.

Introdução ao Programa
​
Após uma calorosa receção pelos elementos da English Matters e restantes participantes dos dez países europeus a participar neste curso, foi feita uma abordagem à história da Finlândia. Esta introdução revelou-se essencial, pois permitiu ficar a conhecer o sistema educativo Finlandês e as suas origens. A educação finlandesa é baseada na sua cultura ancestral, influenciando, assim, profundas mudanças ao longo do tempo. A Finlândia tem um povo lutador, habituado a renascer das cinzas. O governo finlandês acredita nos valores do seu povo e, por isso, escuta todos os atores sociais.

Aproximação dos participantes dos diferentes países através de dinâmicas de grupo. Permitiu a valorização da comunicação em pequenos grupos e o constante aperfeiçoamento da língua inglesa.
Introduction to the programme
After English Matters' staff warm reception to the ten European countries participating in the course , we got to know some aspects of Finnish culture.
This introduction was made in order to let us know the Finnish educational system. We understood that Finnish Education is based in an ancient culture that influenced all the changes over the ages. Finland has a fighting people used to overcome weaknesses through the ages. The Finnish people believe in values, so they are used to listen to all the actors of their society.
Getting to know each other (group
We got to know participants from Spain and Bulgaria and we improved our English speaking skills and group dynamics skills.

A visita guiada a Helsínquia foi uma experiência enriquecedora, percecionando através deste percurso a importância que a educação tem para esta sociedade.
Uma visita pela cidade, que se destacou pelas bibliotecas e onde a história, a religião e a educação se têm revelado primordiais para a construção da cultura de Helsínquia. Assim, poder-se-á dizer que a visão Holística da educação irradia da diversidade cultural dos finlandeses.
Guided tour to Helsinki

The guided tour to Helsinki was an enriching experience because we could feel how important education is to the Finnish society. We realised how history, religion and education built Hesinki's culture and that's why the holistic vision of education comes from Finnish cultural diversity.

A visita decorreu desde a Praça do Senado, através das bibliotecas da cidade: A Biblioteca Nacional da Finlândia, a Biblioteca Universitária de Helsínquia e a nova biblioteca central da cidade, Ooodi.

The Finish Society in Helsinki
Our tourist guide took our group from Senate Square (Senaatintori) through the city libraries: the National Library of Finland, Helsinki University Library; Ooodi, Helsinki`s new Central Library and a living meeting place.

The libraries in Helsinki are extremely well taken care of spaces open to all the population. In some cases they can be considered civic centres where information and technology are free to the population.

Visita educacional à escola I - Lisviniemi koulu- Lisviniemen School, in Espoo
​
A primeira visita no terreno decorreu numa escola de pré-escolar, primeiro e segundo ciclo. Os alunos finlandeses aprendem duas línguas desde cedo, o finlandês e o inglês. Assim, as visitas dos diferentes grupos foram guiadas por alunos do 6º ano, que comunicaram em inglês. Após a visita guiada ao edifício, foi servido o almoço no refeitório. Na Finlândia, todos os alunos têm direito à alimentação gratuita, facilidade no acesso aos cuidados de saúde; aconselhamento psicológico e orientação individualizada. Na Finlândia, as crianças começam a escolaridade obrigatória aos sete anos de idade.

Educational Visit to School I - Lisviniemi koulu- Lisviniemen School, in Espoo.

The first school we visited was a kindergarten school with 1st nad 2nd grades. The Finnish students learn two languages, Finnish and English, since a very young age. The visits of the different groups were guided by 6th grade students who spoke in English. Lunch was served in the school canteen after the guided tour. In Finland everyone has the right to free meals, health care, psychological counselling and individual coaching. In Finland start school when they are seven years old.

Suomenlinna é um tesouro cultural, a sua construção teve início em meados do séc.XVIII, quando a Finlândia ainda fazia parte da Suéca.
Visit to the Suomenlina fortress and to the market square
Here you can visit part of the ancient culture and history of the Finnish people. Suomenlinna is a cultural treasure. Its construction began in the mid-18th century, when Finland was still part of Sweden.

Organização educacional e gestão das aprendizagens II
Visita educacional à escola II - Kuitinmaen koulu-Kuitinmki School, in Espoo
​
Esta é uma escola básica, do primeiro ano do primeiro ciclo até ao nono ano de escolaridade. Mais uma vez os alunos orientaram a visita às salas e aos restantes espaços da escola. Esta escola tem dois edifícios, o primeiro com primeiro e segundo ciclos e a outra escola com o terceiro ciclo. Esta é uma escola bilingue, algumas disciplinas na área das humanidades são lecionadas em inglês e as que dizem respeito às ciências, em finlandês. Aqui é utilizada a metodologia do trabalho de projeto, são promovidas semanas temáticas e tutorias de pares.

​
Porvoo é uma cidade bilingüe de 46.985 habitantes situada na costa do sul da Finlândia, na Finlândia Meridional. Porvoo é a segunda cidade mais antiga da Finlândia depois de Turku.

Educational Visit to School II - Kuitinmaen koulu-Kuitinmki School, in Espoo

This is a primary school from the 1st to the 9th grade. We were also guided by students through the classrooms and other school spaces. The school was divided in two buildings, one from the 1st grade to the 6th grade and the other one with the 7th to the 9th grade. This is a bilingual school, so some subjects related to the sciences are taught in Finnish and the others related with Humanistic studies are in English. Teaching here is based on project based learning, thematic weeks and pair-work tutoring.

Field Project II - Visit to Porvoo
​
Porvoo is a bilingual city with 46.985 inhabitants and it's situated on the southern coast of Finland, in meridian Finland. Porvoo is the second oldest city in Finland after Turku.

Visita educacional à escola III - Espoonlahden koulu ja lukio, in Espoo

A última visita realizada foi a uma escola secundária, onde foi proporcionada uma visita livre pelas salas de aula. Foi muito interessante observar o comportamento dos alunos finlandeses em contexto de sala de aula, pois são bastante autónomos e respeitadores, aderindo responsavelmente e com total autonomia às atividades propostas pelos professores. O trabalho em sala é realizado com os recursos que melhor satisfazem as necessidades de cada estudante, nomeadamente, telemóveis, portáteis ou mesmo cadernos e manuais escolares.

Educational Visit to School III - Espoonlahden koulu ja lukio, in Espoo

Our last visit to a school was to Espoonlahden koulu ja lukio where we had a free pass to walk through the school and visit the classes we wanted to., in Espoo.vIt was very interesting to observe the Finnish students' behaviour in the classroom. They are autonomous and respectful, so the teachers propose the activities and they work by themselves. They used the resources that could fulfill their needs namely their mobile phones, laptops or even notebooks and student books.

Field Project III - Visit to Talinn.

A apenas algumas horas de Helsínquia, Tallinn, a pequena e agradável capital estoniana foi um ótimo passeio de um dia. Património cultural da humanidade pela Unesco, o centro medieval é composto por duas áreas, a parte alta Toompea e a cidade baixa. Boa parte deste conjunto ainda é cercada pelas antigas muralhas defensivas que, de certa forma, isolam o conjunto dos modernos distritos da capital.
Tallin is only a few hours away from Helsinki. It's a small and pleasant capital which was a pleasant onde day trip of It is a World heritage site with a medieval centre made up of two areas: the higher area (Toompea) and the lower area. The major part of this area is still surrounded by the old defensive walls that isolate this part of the city of the modern districts of the capital.

It was a nice experience because this programme gave us the opportunity to know people from all Europe and their educational systems .
We got not only new skills but we also improved our knowledge about education and shared our own experiences.
